FAQs

STYLE

  • I love working with skin and creating a beautiful, glowing finish. I prefer to enhance and compliment features rather than mask them. I tend to go for softer, more natural looks that will make a bride radiant.

  • During your makeup trial, before I even pick up a brush, we’ll have a really thorough discussion about your skin, how much makeup you’re used to wearing on a daily basis, and what colours and styles you, like/don’t like. It can even be helpful if you bring reference photos.

  • Make-up is very personal, and a wedding day is not the time to start experimenting!

Your bridal look will be completely different from someone else’s. There is no “one style fits all”.

My brides tend to go for a more polished version of themselves, with a little added touch here and there to really enhance eye colour, or bring out cheekbones, for example.

Remember, you still want your other half to recognise you as you walk up the aisle!

  • This is one of the biggest concerns brides have and one of the main reasons we hold a trial (preferably in the morning or early afternoon as this is a similar time to when it will be applied on the wedding day).

It’s a myth that long-lasting make-up has to be heavy. For me, your make-up starts with your skin preparation. I’ll choose products to suit your skin type, then move on to primers and foundations that will give longevity, yet still achieve the overall finish you’d like. Good preparation of the skin means you can wear a tinted moisturiser if you want to and it will last all day.

Lots of light layers is key to longevity, and the natural, polished look, my work is known for.

PRODUCTS

  • As I’m a freelance artist, I carry a variety of brands in my kit ranging from high street to high end. No one brand does the best of everything so it’s nice for me to be able to pick and choose the best from them all.

Currently, my kit includes DMK, My Kit Co., Bioderma, Hourglass, Rimmel, L’Oreal, Laura Mercier, By Terry, Nars, Bobbi Brown, Becca, Charlotte Tilbury, Illamasqua, Mac, Kiko, and many others.

Please enquire if there is a particular brand or product you’d like to talk about or have used on your big day as I’m always happy to accommodate.

  • I always buy products with sensitivity in mind.

I tend to prefer more natural/clean brands for cleansing and moisturising, and would invest in high-end brands for primers, foundations, concealers, and powders.

The higher-end brands usually have some built-in skincare which is very nourishing on your face throughout a long wedding day.

  • No problem at all! If you feel completely confident in one of your own products and would prefer I use it, that’s totally fine! I’ll still use all my other prep. and finishing products so you’ll get the professional finish that you have booked me for.

  • Yes, I carry a wide variety of false lashes from strips to individual and clusters.

  • At present, my kit is quite mixed, but I am working towards purchasing more from vegan brands. I am more than happy to use your own vegan products if you’d like to bring them along for your application.

  TRIALS

  • I recommend that makeup trials are booked around 4-6 weeks before the wedding (give or take!) and are held midweek, either in the morning or early afternoon.

At this stage of wedding planning, you will have a good idea of your overall wedding style, and this will inform the makeup look. You also need to be able to see your makeup in natural light and to test the staying power over the course of the day.

The season can also be a factor in your style of make-up, and the condition of your skin may determine if we go for a more hydrating glowing finish, or something a little more matte/satin, so 4-6 weeks in advance of the wedding gives us a really close approximation of how it could be on the day.

Unfortunately, weekends and most holiday dates are not available for trials as I am usually booked with a wedding.

  • Hopefully, you have booked with me as you like my style and trust that I will create a look that you’ll love, but I appreciate that makeup is very personal.

So, if you’re feeling a little anxious about your makeup, or just want to try something a little more experimental, then you’re more than welcome to book in for a trial as early as you’d like.

I do highly recommend that you book for another trial closer to the time (usually 4-6 weeks before the wedding), where we’ll refresh on everything we did previously, and run over all the details/addresses/timings for the wedding morning.

Due to the extra time this takes, there is a small charge for the additional trial that we can discuss prior to booking.

  • Trials are held at my private home studio at 1 Plantation Drive, Carrickfergus, BT38 9RF.

The studio has its own entrance at the side of the house, and there is plenty of parking space on the drive.

Toilet facilities are also available. The studio is by appointment only and, as there is no waiting area, if you arrive early, please wait in your car until your appointment time. I may still be with another client, or cleaning the studio between clients, ahead of your appointment.

  • Please come makeup-free to your appointment, but moisturise as normal so your skin is hydrated and feels comfortable. I will still cleanse/freshen your skin, but being make-up free saves unnecessary heavier cleansing just ahead of your application which could cause redness or watery eyes.

If you plan on wearing a tan on the wedding day, please try to have this on for the trial as will affect the foundation shade and, potentially, the other colour cosmetics used.

Also, if possible, please wear a top in a similar colour, or tone, to your wedding dress so you have an approximation of how the make-up will look against it.

Lastly, please get into a good skin routine as soon as possible – beautiful makeup begins with beautiful skin. I work with skincare brand DMK, so please book in for a DMK consultation at the time of booking your wedding makeup if you’d like some more info.

  • I will be in touch around 2-3 months before your wedding date with a list of available appointments, but if you have a specific date in mind (e.g. you want to try and book your hair trial or a dress fitting for the same date) then please get in touch and I’ll do my best to facilitate this.

  • My studio space is designed for one-to-one appointments, but I do have space for up to 2 guests.

Unfortunately, for health and safety, I cannot accommodate any more than this.

WEDDING MORNING

  • Firstly, to keep the morning as relaxed as possible, I recommend booking with a hairstylist that can come out to the house or venue. It means everyone is in the same place and you can all stay together!

To calculate our start time, I usually work backward from your ceremony time and aim to have all applications finished around an hour before you are due to leave. This ensures that only minor touch-ups are necessary in this final, busy “golden hour” before the big moment!

To give you a rough idea, I allocate approximately 45 minutes per person, plus 15 minutes when I arrive to set up. This keeps the flow of the morning quite relaxed, and gives a little time for unexpected moments like present opening, flowers arriving, and champagne popping!

  • Cleanse and moisturise as normal on the morning of your wedding. It may be a few hours before you’re sitting in my make-up chair, and I want your skin to feel comfortable until you do.

Don’t do anything drastic to your skin in the week or so leading up to your wedding, but work on barrier repair and hydration so your skin is calm and plump!

  • I usually do the bride in the middle of the applications. This means you’re not ready too early but you’re not the last to go, as you have the most to do at the end of the morning!

Some brides can, understandably, get a little anxious if everyone else is nearly ready and they still have to get a full face of make-up on.

Final touch-ups are done just before I leave, so no need to worry if you have another bite to eat or sip of champagne!

  • No not at all, so long as hair doesn’t need washed/blow-dried after your makeup is applied!

Most hairdressers will advise washing hair the evening before so it’s not too soft on the morning of the wedding.

If there are any blow dries on the wedding morning, just have them done first so it frees that person up for makeup later.

  • You shouldn’t need to top up your foundation or reapply your blusher, etc. but wedding days are long, and can be very emotional! And you’ll almost certainly be doing a lot of eating, drinking, and kissing.

I always tell brides to pack a pressed translucent powder (in case the venue is a bit warm, or if you get a bit hot from dancing) and a creamy concealer to dab under your eyes in case shadow or liner gets smudged by (happy!) tears.

Lastly, buy the same lipstick that was used when your make-up was first applied for a touch-up after kisses and the main meal.

TRAVEL

  • Yes, I will come to you at home or to your venue. I’ll bring a make-up chair and a pop-up table with me to work off.

All I need is a little floor space and some natural light. Please enquire about up-to-date pricing for travel mileage.

  • Everything within a 20-mile radius from my address in Carrickfergus is included free of charge, everything beyond that is charged per mile.

In light of recent worldwide events and rapidly rising fuel costs, please enquire about up-to-date travel costs at the time of booking.

BOOKING

  • My diary opens roughly 18 months in advance, with weekend and holiday dates being booked up very quickly. However, Mon-Thurs dates can be available with just a few months’ notice, so I always recommend contacting me, even if you find yourself racing towards your wedding date!

I would strongly suggest that, if you’re certain I’m the make-up artist for you (thank you!), you don’t delay in getting in touch.

  • Usually, I can comfortably do up to 6 applications by myself on a wedding morning. If you have a larger party, I can book another make-up artist to come along and assist (reasonable notice is required).

This may entail a second travel fee.

  • Please email via the contact form to check my current availability for bridal work.

  • Once you have enquired about availability, I will then calculate a tailored quote.

If, on receiving the quotation, you’d like to confirm the booking, your date is secured by completing a booking form and paying a non-refundable booking fee.

I only ever take one bridal booking per day, and dates are “sold” on a first come first served basis. If I have multiple inquiries for the same date, whoever returns their form and fee first will be confirmed in my diary.

Over the years, I’ve concluded that this is the fairest way to work for both brides, and myself.

  • Once a wedding date is confirmed, this date is held, and all other potential work is turned away.

For this reason, booking fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.

I will, of course, do my best to accommodate wherever possible, but cannot guarantee this.

    Please enquire for full T&Cs.
